SUMMERY OF THE ESTATE
We are at a young winery this time, but please don’t think that they lack experience. Frankly, they did a very good job at Samartzis Estate, and we loved their wines.
Samartzis Estate was founded in 2008 by former pharmacist Panos Samartzis and his brother Spiros Samartzis. They focus mainly on Greek varieties. Their motto is “each vineyard—one wine,” emphasizing the production of high quality. Samartzis has maintained the 300-year-old estate and begun to work on the unique characteristics of the land, such as Kontoura, Mouchtaro.
We had a great time with Panos, who has extensive knowledge about the area. Once we arrived at the winery, we saw a truly boutique concept. Their hospitality was just wonderful. We also had a chance to meet his family such a lovely group! The winery is located in the village of Askri, within the Valley of the Muses in Boeotia. Their 10-hectare estate benefits from cooling breezes from Mount Helicon and sunshine, creating an ideal environment for viticulture. They cultivate Kontoura (a clone of Savatiano), Malagouzia, Mouchtaro, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache.

Greek Varieties
Mouchtaro: I want to share a detail in here because Mouchtaro is late ripening, low yielding local red grape that nearly became extinct in the 70s.
Kontoura: The wide white! It is a clan of Savvatiano and one of the most widely planted Greek variety, traditionally used in the production of Retsina.
Malagouzia: Very aromatic native variety of Greece.
International Varieties
Grenache Rouge
Syrah
